При убийстве набирайте «У» был снят в формате «3-D» (т. е. зрители могли смотреть его только в специальных очках), но очень скоро был переведен на обычную пленку. Только недавно фильм был снова выпущен в Америке в З-мерном формате. В данном случае 3-мерный формат оказывается, если можно так выразиться, огромной и вопиющей тавтологией, поскольку далее «в плоском виде» режиссура Хичкока так осваивает тесное пространство, предоставленное почти единственной декорацией, что приобретает необыкновенную объемность. Чтобы выделить этот прием, Хичкок даже отказался от традиционных шоковых эффектов и ограничился тем, что поставил камеру в углубление так, чтобы объектив часто оказывался на уровне пола.При убийстве набирайте «У», как никакой другой фильм Хичкока, ставит важный вопрос о виртуозности режиссера. Помогает ли она раскрыться подлинной теме фильма или. наоборот, скрывает ее? Ответить можно так: и то, и другое сразу - и в этом ключик к творчеству Хичкока, с которым мало чье творчество в истории кино может сравниться по двойственности, и к поведению режиссера в интервью, появлениям на публике и бесчисленным шутовским подводкам, записанным для телесериала «Алфред Хичкок представляет». Виртуозность и все поведение Хичкока нацелены на то, чтобы окружить плотным туманом одну скандальную истину, которая была для него очевидна, но он гнал ее от себя всеми силами, а именно: для некоторых людей преступление является самым естественным и желанным поступком. Тайный последователь Де Куинси и его труда «Об убийстве…», он описывал не только убийц закомплексованных и терзаемых стыдом, но и других преступников, которые чувствуют себя в этом качестве совершенно свободно, сатанинских отродий, для которых преступление - единственная цель в жизни. Хотя ему не удается совершить идеальное преступление, в психологическом и ментальном отношении он почти что является идеальным преступником - изобретательным, смелым, убедительным и абсолютно бесстрастным. Теми же качествами обладал и Джон Долл в Веревке, но тот действовал скорее как и.о., подчиняясь полуосознанному влиянию своего учителя (Джеймс Стюарт), а главное - рядом был крайне неудачный «ассистент» в лице Фарли Грейнджера.Хичкок по-разному защищался от того, что казалось ему непреложной истиной (предрасположенность некоторых людей к преступлению). И все же как создатель персонажей он не мог удержаться и не подчеркнуть интеллектуальное превосходство, обаяние, щегольство, увлеченность, трагическую ауру некоторых преступников по сравнению с невинными жертвами и борцами за справедливость, которые у него зачастую аморфны, бесцветны и безлики, даже если им удается довольно неплохо справляться со своими задачами. В этих случаях Хичкок наделяет их чувством юмора (см. инспектора Хаббарда в исполнении Джона Уильямза). Как и многие голливудские режиссеры, но по причинам, больше связанным с моралью, Хичкок спрятал в глубине своих, на 1-й взгляд, самых поверхностных фильмов частицу тайного смысла всего своего творчества.
